I'll be posting a series of posts from The life/non-life continuum: A List - FRDB on that subject, mostly on biosynthesis and energy metabolism.

As one looks backward in it, one runs into the question of the origin of the first organism(s), and origin-of-life research often seems to me like this:


We still haven't gotten from prebiotic chemistry to the first organisms -- even RNA-world ones or whatever their predecessors might have been. But at least the RNA world makes the gap smaller than the gap to the ancestors of the three domains of cellular organisms.
